Rathdown School is committed to being an environmentally friendly school - to conserving energy, reducing waste and to educating its community on practical ways everyone can protect our natural environment. Rathdown is also a participator in the International Green Schools campaign, which we launched in the School in 2006/7. There is a Green Schools Committee in both the Junior and Senior School and the whole programme is very student-led. Starting in the Junior School, Green Schools has quickly become a way of life for the students and staff.
JUNIOR SCHOOL The Junior School received its first Green Flag from the then Minister for Education and Science Mary Hanafin in May 2007, following an extensive programme of waste reduction. The following year, the P6 girls led the whole school community in working towards completing their next flag by making Energy the focus of their BT Young Scientist project. The P6 girls did such a good job that they won the Primary School prize at the BT Young Scientist exhibition.
This year the School has been continuing the good work. The three target areas to reduce the energy used in the school are outlined below. Lights and Appliances: the Green Schools Committee organised a logo and created signage to remind everyone to turn off lights and appliances when they are not in use and at the end of the day. New energy A-rated efficient lights have been installed throughout the School. Heat: A timer has been installed controlling when the heat is on, and the main thermostat has been turned down by one degree. All outside doors have been fitted with springs so they close properly, and thermometers have been installed in each classroom so that the girls can monitor the temperature. Transport: The Green Schools Committee together with the PTA instigated a Walk to School campaign which commenced in October 2008. Safe pathways were put in place, girls were given talks on safety by the Gardai and everyone learned the Safe Cross Code. High Visibility Jackets were given to every student - supplied by the Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Council. The Junior School awards a Golden Boot to the class that has the most walkers each week.
Latest News from the Junior School Green Schools Committee The Junior School has prepared a school garden, instigated a composting programme and has installed a water butt which collect rainwater and allows it to be used at a later stage. They have completed the Renwal Application and on Wednesday 10 December are having a visit from Kate Hynes from the Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Council which is a vital step in the quest for the second green flag.
SENIOR SCHOOL The Green Schools Committee has been doing some great work in the Senior School this year.
- All recycling paper bins in the school have been clearly labelled,
- There are new food bins in the Canteen, boarders dining room and staff room for food scraps,
- A compost bin has been installed,
- A suggestion box has been introduced,
- A notice board has gone up,
- The Committee has been very active in educating the Senior School community,
- Next up they will be introducing re-usable cups in the Canteen (instead of the plastic disposable ones).
