Rathdown School

Junior School Sport

Sport is an important part of the Junior School curriculum and every child’s timetable includes at least two PE classes per week.

All students benefit from our extensive range of sports facilities, which include The Merrion Fleet Arena, a world-class water-based pitch, in addition to a floodlit, astroturf hockey pitch and a fully equipped multi-purpose sports hall. Tennis courts (floodlit) and a 200m running track with long jump and shot put areas.

As well as team sports such as hockey, basketball and tennis, the school runs annual athletics and swimming programmes.  We participate in many different sporting events throughout the school year; these include Leinster leagues, inter-school galas, Cumann na mBunscol, and a range of other tournaments.

PE is a key part of school life in Rathdown. We encourage every student to participate in all areas of sport from playing to coaching and umpiring. In the Junior School, the emphasis in PE is on FUN and developing a love of activity.  Sport can play such a big part in each child’s development and we encourage everyone by including new sports into our PE programme year on year.

In 2016 we were awarded our first Active School Flag and this is something we are very proud of. Our Sports captains and sports committee play a big role in ensuring that maintain this award annually.
